What makes a Silver City Scented Candle so special? It’s in the way we make our candles. All of our candles are individually hand poured. We use NO machinery in the making any of our highly scented candles. This ensures the perfect wick placement and the right fragrance concentration. This old fashioned method is what makes our candles better.

Just as important is what we use to make our candles. We use only the Finest Quality Waxes and Fragrances on the market. When you put the two together you end up with a even, clean burning, quality candle.

Silver City Candle Uses NO Chemical Additives that can cause allergic like reactions (headaches, watery eyes, sneezing). This makes our scented candles about 15 -25% longer burning than our competition. Additionally, we use only all natural wicks (No Lead Core Wick like some of our competitors, all candles are 100% lead free).

Honestly, when I first heard of soy candles, I thought, Yuk, I don t eat soy or tofu or anything like that. Why do I want soy in my candles? After some thorough research, I found out why. Let me first tell you, I am a seasoned Massage Therapist who has done massage in small, enclosed rooms 5 days a week, 8 hours a day for over 15 years. I burn a lot of candles.

Regular candles are made of paraffin wax. I love them for decoration and home decor or burning for short periods of time, like at wedding ceremonies. Really, though, they are made of petroleum bi-products and I don t want to inhale that all day. Do you?

Candles have been used for centuries for celebration, hospitality and nurturing holistic therapy. It is a welcome breath of fresh air (literally) to have a soy wax candle available for everyone, whenever they want. Soy candles are clean burning and will not damage carpets, walls or draperies. They are non-toxic and safe around children and pets. They will not trigger allergies. Soy wax is made from natural soybean oil and does not contain any petroleum or chemicals. Using soy candles creates economic growth for United States agriculture. They are handcrafted right here at home. Scented soy candles have fade-resistant color and radiate their excellent fragrance-holding capacity further than paraffin candles. They are water soluble and any spills clean up easily with a little soap and water. Soy candles burn at a significantly lower rate than paraffin candles which makes them last longer and, therefore, are more cost-effective.

Soy candles appeal to everyone whether they are bought for decoration and home decor, mood enhancement, or as an environmentally sensible alternative.

So you want to grow roses? They are a beautiful choice for your garden and not nearly as difficult to grow as you might think. 1. Choose a rose that is easy to grow. Some choices might be Sunsprite , Baby Love , The Fairy , Iceberg , or Flower Carpet . Also check to see which roses do well in your climate. When choosing a rose think about the colors and fragrance that appeals to you. 2. Understand the soil type and provide good drainage. Use organic matter to make your soil better for the roses. Plant your roses correctly and in the best place in your garden for the rose s success. 3. Know how often to water and how much water to give the roses. Too much water is not good so develop a watering schedule and stick to it. 4. Understand how the different types of water systems work. You can choose from sprinklers, an underground watering system or a drip irrigation system. It is usually good to keep the water off the leaves if you live in an area where rose diseases are a problem. 5. Mulching keeps the water in and the weeds away. Mulching is a very good idea when growing roses. Mulch in the early spring when you remove the protective coverings from winter. If you live in a warmer climate spread the mulch just before the roses start to leaf out. 6. Learn the kinds of nutrients your roses need and follow a specific fertilizing program. When growing roses it is important to test the pH of your soil. If the pH is right the roots can interact with the enzymes and bacteria in the soil and do well with the natural nutrients and the ones you add. The pH can be between 5.6 and 7.2 however 6 to 6.5 is best. By testing the soil you will know which nutrients to add. 7. Learn how to prune your roses. Pruning keeps the roses healthy and looking good. 8. Prevent pest and disease problems before they happen. Learn how to control pests and choose safe pest control products. Growing roses is a delightful hobby and not nearly as complicated as you might have heard. About the Author Ken Austin 1stinroses 1stdiscountshopping

When you are trying to incite a romantic mood you need to have some good quality aromatherapy candles to arm yourself with. These aromatherapy candles will be what makes or breaks your romantic evening. You need to take special care when choosing the aromatherapy candles that you want to use as well. There is nothing like a terrible smell to turn someone off and nothing like a great one to turn them on. The trick is to know which is which. Remember that what smells good to you may not smell good to your partner.

When you are in the planning stages of your special night you need to find out what kinds of smells will thrill your partner. Men often respond well to vanilla. Some experts even claim that vanilla scents are a male aphrodisiac. So if your partner is a mail then you may want to get yourself some great vanilla aromatherapy candles. These will get him in the mood right as he walks in the door.

What makes vanilla such a good choice of aromatherapy candles is that it appeals to almost anyone, both men and women. Very few people dislike vanilla aromatherapy candles and they will not take away from anyone appetite. If you have some of these aromatherapy candles burning they will even make your dinner taste better. They put people in such a good mood and they make them hungry as well.

You can place your aromatherapy candles all over the house, but only in the rooms that you plan on spending some time in. You may want to mix in your aromatherapy candles with other non scented candles. If you have too many aromatherapy candles around the scent can become overwhelming and that is never good. You want your scented rooms to be subtle and stimulating. So one or two aromatherapy candles in a room at one time is a good idea.

You should also take care with the aromatherapy candles that you choose. If you want to mix the candle scents you need to watch carefully. Some scents will not mix together well at all. Before you have your special and romantic evening you need to test the smells together to see if they blend well. This is vitally important to your entire evening.

You may want to have your candles on the actual dinner table be regular non scented candles. Having aromatherapy candles on the table is probably not a very good idea as it can interfere with the flavors of the dinner itself. So keep the aromatherapy candles away from the dinner table and your dinner will be a bigger hit.

You can have aromatherapy candles in the bedroom as well but do not light these before you get in that room. You should never leave candles unattended for too long, especially if you have pets. They could knock them over and start a fire. Proper aromatherapy candle safety is necessary at all times.

Floribunda roses are some of the most amazing out there because of the large, dense amounts of buds that are produced. These roses will have simultaneously occurring blooms in each truss. They are less perfect looking roses but are so dense in their production that they can truly make a statement in virtually any landscape especially when planted together. Here are some facts to know about the Floribunda roses. What’s The Difference? Few of these roses are scented and their shape is not always of the perfect rose. But, they make up for this quality when you take into consideration the all summer long blooming of rich colors and beautifully dense foliage that they provide. Easy To Grow? Although the Floribunda rose is a rose, which tend to be difficult plants to grow, they are less of a problem to many. They are more tolerant to conditions and the environment and also continue to produce blooms over and over again. They are easier to grow only because they can take more punishment, so to speak. Where Can I Plant Them? Floribunda roses can be planted in any open but not vulnerable location. They enjoy the sun and varieties are available for different amounts of sunlight as well. They can and should be planted as bare roots from the months of November to March in most climates. This is much less expensive as well. Trim Those Roots! Before you plant them, make sure to prune back the roots to allow for new root growth to take place. This can make a large difference in the quality of these roses. Feed Them? When they begin to grow in the spring, you’ll want to feed them with a rose fertilizer that can be commonly found. Do this monthly until the end of summer months. Which Ones Do I Go With? There are several varieties of the Floribunda rose. You can choose those that you enjoy and that will prosper in your environment. Some good choices include Rob Roy which is very deep red in color, Glenfiddisch which is a golden amber color with large flowers, and the Ballindallock Castle which is a salmon/coral color of blooms. I am from Missouri. The state suprises me the more I explore her. Tonight I am staying in a hotel in Branson, Missouri. Many of you are probably familiar with the city, I am not. Evidentally I was here at the age of 5,… but to be honest, if I can remember something that happened 10 years ago, I am doing pretty good… let alone 27 years ago!

Anyway, enough rambling about my memory condition.

Many folks have visited Silver Dollar City. For those of you that don’t know, SDC is a theme park modeled after the way of life in the hills of the Ozarks. The visitor will witness many craftsmen / craftswomen, one of these are the old-tyme (purposely mispelled) chandlers.

You may see an old man with a long white beard dipping wickes in a vat of wax heated by a fire. To someone who has been making candles for several years, this was an incredible sight. Obviously to the average candle burner, not to great of a spectacle unless that casual candle user has not idea how candles are made… in large factories in China.

Seriously though,… a lot of work goes into hand made candles. Of course many candle companies are born out of a basements, garages, spare rooms, and kitchens. Back in the olde (purposely mispelled) days, convieniences were a rarity. Candle distributers where unheard of, and they definately couldn’t import candles made in foreign countries buy the container full!

The wax was heated over fire… someone manually dipped the wicks. A lot of work, compared to today’s standards, went into making a candle!

Ok… by now you are asking me to get to the point. Next time you purchase a candle or candles (soy or paraffin), do you local chandler a favor and try a truly handmade / hand-dipped candle and check out the difference. Not only the way it looks, but the way it burns, how long it burns, and how it smells. You might be suprised, and you may change your preference in candle purchasing. The subtle differences in the wax alone will amaze you!

Your local chandler puts a lot of time, effort, and love into the candles they hand make. They take pride in their product. They are forced to produce a super high quality product to stay competitive in the marketplace. Sure, they may cost a little more, but as they say in the hills of the ozarks, “Ya pay fer what ya git!”

I was checking your site for a good outdoor/citronella candle but couldn t find one do you make citronella candles?

While Susquehanna Candle does not promote their candles as citronella, their formula makeup is coincidently constructed in such a way that repels most summer time bugs and pests including mosquitoes and black flies.

So next time you have a summer party set out a few of our lit triple-wick candles and be pleasantly surprised by the results. Another tid bit about our candles is that, unlike many of our competitors, including the nation s leading candle company, Susquehanna Candles have an extremely high melting point. This means that they will not deform or melt all over the back seat of your car on a hot summer day, nor will they arrive at your doorstep, after shipment, in any other way than perfect condition wicks remaining straight and wax blemish-free.

I m afraid of lighting candles in my house because I have young kids what would you recommend as an alternative?

There is no need for an alternative. Many of our candles can scent a small room without even being lit. Also, our candles are made up of 100% Cotton Wicks and the wax is of the highest quality and food grade; that means we use the same wax in our candles as do chocolate and candy bakers. Therefore, you needn t worry about children who seem to put any thing and everything into their mouths our candles are completely safe and non-toxic for both kids and curious pets.

I keep hearing about Soy Candles and how they are supposed to be the most environmentally friendly do you sell soy candles?

Yes, Soy Candles do seem to be the latest trend. While Susquehanna Candle has honored requests to manufacture soy candles for a few high-end cosmetic companies, we do not make any under our own brand and recommend steering clear of them for a variety of reasons. Our research has found that soy candles have a limited shelf life, poor fragrance quality, low melting points, heavy material expense and inaccurate impression of being the highest quality candle.

Soy candles seem to have a minimal shelf life, many becoming rancid within only six months after production. To counteract this, many companies that boast Soy Candles only use 1-10% soy in their wax in an attempt to lengthen the candle life. They often substitute other less expensive and dirtier waxes for the remainder of the candle therefore creating a candle that carries the name soy but not much else. At Susquehanna Candle, we use only the best quality, food-grade, paraffin wax. This ensures a cleaner burn that is completely environmentally (and kid) safe. The formula and composition of Susquehanna Candles is unique to our company.

In general, soy candles do provide a cleaner burn and smoother surface than most other wax types. Susquehanna Candle has created their wax formula in such a fashion that we will put our candles up against soy candles any day. We guarantee they will burn just as well (if not better), and their surface will be as smooth, as cosmetically perfect (if not better), than soy candles.

Finally most soy candles that are on the market are unscented, or in only a limited number of fragrances. This is because the wax, itself, is not made to hold fragrance oils. When the oils are added the natural fatty scent of soy combines with that of the fragrance oil to distort and curdle the intended scent.

Soy candles also are created with a very low melting point. This means, if you purchase them, we recommend not leaving them in your car on a hot summer day when you return there will be nothing but wax in your backseat. Nor do we recommend ordering them during the summer you will face a very similar problem. Susquehanna Candles are formulated to withstand high temperatures up to 160 degrees without disfigurement or melting.

After the candle is done burning, some of the wax has melted down, but much of the wax is missing. Where does the missing wax go? Does it turn into airborne particles only to be inhaled by my lungs? This has puzzled me, so I was hoping you could help me out.

This is what happens when you burn a candle, the wax oxidizes in the flame to yield water and carbon dioxide, which dissipate in the air around the candle, in a reaction which also yields light and heat. Paraffin wax is composed of chains of connected carbon atoms surrounded by hydrogen atoms. These hydrocarbon molecules can burn completely. First the heat of the flame vaporizes the wax molecules and then they react with the oxygen in the air. As long as the wax doesn’t melt away from the flame, the flame will consume it completely and leave no ash or wax residue.

This is not harmful. However, do check to make sure the candles you purchase contain wicks that are 100% Cotton. Many imports contain lead wicks which can cause severe health problems.

When purchasing a candle how does one know if a candle is scented throughout or simply scented on the surface?

Unfortunately there is no clear way to tell whether the candle is scented throughout or not, unless it says directly on the package. However, through my experience, I have found the cheaper candles (primarily those coming from china) seem to only have fragranced coatings on them with chunks of unscented wax in the middle. Fragrance oil is one of the most expensive ingredients in candle manufacturing. I recommend simply using your common sense: if you see a 22 oz candle for $5 more than likely you will not receive the same fragrance at the beginning as at the end.

Someone once asked me about an expression they d read but didn t quite understand. The expression referred to a game being worth its candle. Can you provide any help?

The more usual form of this expression is not worth the candle. It dates from medieval times, when any night-time activity had to be lit by candles, which were expensive. So some activity that wasn t worth the candle wasn t worth the cost of supplying the light to see it by. It s only now, when the obvious link between the situation and the expression has been lost as a result of changing technology, that people can use forms like not worth its candle, subtly shifting the sense and making it harder to understand.

Incidentally, candles played such a large part in life in the centuries before whale oil lamps, gas and electricity successively appeared that several expressions are connected with them, such as can t hold a candle to him, meaning that a person isn t fit even to hold the candle for somebody else to work. Another is burn the candle at both ends, to be spendthrift, to expend one s effort too lavishly, or try to do too much at once.

In my dog s excitement at welcoming a dinner guest into my home, his tail knocked over one of my candles and ended up spilling the wax onto my carpeted floor. How do I get the wax out?

You can remove melted candle wax from a carpet or even a piece of furniture with a brown paper bag and an iron. Just place a piece of brown paper (folded) over the melted wax area and place a hot iron, on a low setting, on top of the newspaper for 5 to 10 seconds, lift up iron and paper. The wax should have soaked up into the paper and removed it from the carpet. This might need to be repeated a few times.

I have melted votive candle wax all over the bottom of my favorite holder. How do I get it out?

To get any of our melted votive wax out of holders, simply place the holder in the refrigerator for an hour and wax will pop out. How does this happen, you ask? Well, wax, like many other solids, shrinks when the temperature is lowered, thereby releasing itself naturally from its container. Buyer beware: while this technique is guaranteed to work on any Susquehanna Candle, it may not work on other candle brands votives.

There are many reasons why you might want to dry your roses. Some people just want to keep a memento of a special moment. Perhaps they are a part of a wedding that you went to; maybe they were a gift from a mate, friend, or family member. Whatever your reasons for doing it, this is the section where you will learn to dry your roses properly. There two ways drying rose petal can happen and that are cheap and relatively easy. Air Drying Air drying is by far the easiest and cheapest method of drying flowers including roses. It is simple; all you have to do is follow these simple instructions. Start with perfect and unflawed roses on their stems. If the roses are not in perfect condition, they will wither and the petals will fall off. Remove any leaves that may be on the branches. Bunch them up together in a manner that lets them fan out. Tie the bottom with string or a rubber band. Hang them upside down in a dark, dry place for two to three weeks to be certain that they are completely dry. Sand Drying Start by picking the roses that are in perfect condition. They shouldn t have any dew on them and the stems should be dry as well. You can reinforce the stems and blossom with either white glue or florist wire. For florist wire, you will want to cut off most of the stem. Leave about one inch of stem. Push about 3 inches of wire through the stem and right through the flower head. Next, you want to bend the end of the wire into a hook over each rose head and pull it down. This helps to keep the head secured to the stem. When choosing to use the glue, begin by diluting the glue in a dab of water. You will take a toothpick and dab a thin coat of the glue mixture at the base of each petal. Next, you will work the glue into the base of the stems of each flower so that you can attach each petal to the base, wait till the glue dries completely Now for the sand, slowly and carefully cover the flowers with sand in deep open boxes. Make the sand in the box deep enough to hold the flowers upright. Sit each flower in the sand filled box and slowly pour sand around the base, around the sides, and over and under the petals. You should pour the sand evenly so that you can preserve the flowers natural shape. You will want to wait for the flowers to dry while facing upright. Put the boxes with the roses in a dry space that is warm and brightly lit. This will ensure that your roses will maintain their bright color. Let them dry for one to three weeks. If you want more muted colors, you will want to dry them in a more humid area. To remove the sand, tip the drying container slightly so that the sand can fall off the flowers. Remove each flower one by one. Now you have successfully learned how to dry your roses so that they are ready for you to do whatever you d like with them. These dried flowers will make great decorations for any room in your house or office, or whatever else you d like to do.
